Sunlit Edge, 12x24, oil on Ampersand Gessobord
Ampersand Artist Ambassador Scott Gellatly is a landscape painter at heart, but his work has become more abstracted, with greater emphasis on pure color and gestural mark-making to evoke nature. As a plein air painter, Scott uses Ampersand Gessobord, Aquabord, and Pastelbord for his work.
"Ampersand panels are ready to capture each stroke of color. The perfect supports to support my art! I’ve always been driven to make things. No matter the medium, I find excitement and wonder in creating something that didn’t exist the day before. Whether that creation succeeds or fails, it drives my creative process forward - eager to begin the next piece." – Scott Gellatly
Over Union Bay, 12x12, oil on Ampersand Gessobord
Over Union Bay was painted plein air one evening in 2005 while overlooking Seattle’s Union Bay. This piece sums up my five years living in Seattle, which was a time that I focused heavily on plein air painting. For me, this piece captures the area’s unique geography and dramatic weather. This is also the time I started regularly using Ampersand Gessobord. It’s been a great honor to have this painting featured on the Ampersand Gessobord label since 2007.
As a plein air painter, so much of the energy from the painting process lives through the brushwork. Whether applied thinly or generously, the subtle surface of Gessobord grabs color from the loaded brush and communicates the intention of the artist’s hand directly to the viewer.
Trastevere, 6x6, oil on Ampersand Gessobord
As long as I’ve been plein air painting, I’ve made a practice of painting while traveling. For me, there’s no better way of getting to know a place than through painting it. Painting in Italy will always be very special to me. These small paintings were painted in Rome in the summer of 2018. The street scene was done one espresso-fueled morning while dodging streetsweepers in the Trastevere neighborhood.
Ampersand Gessobord, Pastelbord, and Aquabord are perfect for their respective mediums. As an artist who works in a variety of painting mediums, having a panel that showcases the unique mark-making potential of each medium is incredibly valuable.
