Hester Berry
Hester Berry's practice is rooted in traditional representation and methods, yet constantly challenges the understanding of “painting” by exploring how paint can represent effects such as light, time, movement, and climate. Marks are used as economically as possible, distilling the image, feeling, or moment into what is essential, allowing objective representation to leave space for subjective interpretation.
Having grown up in rural Devon, Berry has always been drawn to landscape and the environment. Traditional university training in Aberystwyth nurtured this interest and also led to an exploration of life drawing and portraiture. Further studies culminated in an MA in Fine Art in Wimbledon, followed by teaching life drawing and painting in Brighton and London. In 2016, Berry returned to Devon, where she now lives and works.
