Leonardo Ortega
Leonardo Ortega (b. 1992, Durango, Mexico) is a visual artist based in Durango, Mexico, and co-founder of Línea A gallery. His practice engages with contemporary figurative painting, exploring themes of interiority, narrative tension, and the subtle dynamics of everyday objects and spaces. Ortega has presented eight solo exhibitions, including Trato Directo (2024) at Galería Tianguis Neza, Mexico City; Transiciones (2024) at CRIA, Baja California; Fragmentos (2021) as part of the OONO 20. Memoria program by Observatorio Norte, Durango; Búsquedas (2021) at CRIA; Vacíos Usurpados (2020) at the Palacio de los Gurza Museum, Durango; and Las Cuestiones (2019), Tamaulipas.
He has participated in more than twenty group exhibitions in Mexico and the United States, including Paintings of Common Objects at the Fortnight Institute, New York; Los cuentos que se cuentan at APTO Galería, Jalisco; Nuevas Narrativas in Querétaro; Distopía: Contemporary Figurative Painting in Durango; and Atenciones a la Interioridad at Galería Línea A, among others.
Ortega’s work has been recognized with several awards and distinctions, including the National Young Art Encounter (Encuentro Nacional de Arte Joven) in Aguascalientes (2020, 2023), Honorable Mentions at the José Atanasio Monroy Biennial (2022, 2024), and first place at the Ángel Zárraga Regional Biennial (2019). He has been a recipient of the PECDA Young Creators Fellowship (2012, 2018) and was selected as a Young Creators Fellow by SACPC in 2022.
