Sandra Duran Wilson
Sandra Duran Wilson is an internationally recognized artist, author, lecturer, and juror. Her innovative, award-winning mixed media art has been influenced by her extensive scientific background and synesthesia. Music and scientific concepts in astrophysics inform the visual story she paints in acrylic and mixed media. The work takes on dimension as the multiple layers reveal a peek at the process and layers.
Born and raised on the border of Mexico, Sandra currently lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico. As a child she apprenticed under her great aunt Santa Duran, a renowned artist (1909-2002). She pursued studies in physics, biology, and chemistry and earned degrees in both Fine Art and Cognitive Science from the University of New Mexico.
Sandra’s many honors and accolades include having her art We Are All Connected selected for the permanent collection and installation in the new Santa Fe Convention Center. This painting is displayed in the main entry of the building alongside many other noted New Mexican artists. She is also the recipient of several Art in Public Places awards from the state of New Mexico. In 2021 she received the honor of an Artist Residence at the Chateau Orquevaux in France.
Sandra’s numerous one-person and group exhibitions span the globe including two exhibitions in Australia. A recent solo show returned her to her alma mater, the University of New Mexico. She filled the Collectors Gallery at Popejoy Hall, the Performing Arts Hall in Albuquerque, NM with her recent work depicting abstract galactic interpretations. She is represented by galleries in the U.S. and Australia.
Her artwork is included in many private, corporate, and educational collections worldwide. She created a painting based on the world premiere opera, The Revolution of Steve Jobs, in the Spectacle Show in Santa Fe, NM. Another distinction includes having her artwork New Worlds, which is in a collection in Germany, selected as a digital image to travel on the spaceship Osiris-Rex to the asteroid Bennu.
Sandra is a highly regarded author of six best-selling books for Penguin Random House. She has written articles for Acrylic Artist magazine and she had a monthly column in Cloth, Paper, Scissors magazine. She also initiated an International Creativity Community, through which she hosts blogs, video lessons and inspirational resources. Recognized for her technical artistic proficiency, Sandra has served as an Ampersand Artist Ambassador and worked directly with other art suppliers.
As a noted artist, author, and lecturer, Sandra has traveled worldwide on the invitation of many distinguished art organizations including Watermedia Society of Hawaii and The Rocky Mountain Collage Society. She has served as the juror for the First National Abstract Show for the Wichita Center for the Arts and the Society of Layerists in multimedia.
Sandra was recently selected as a Sponsored Artist by BoldBrush and Fine Art Studio Online. Her art is featured in the Manhattan Arts International curated online gallery, based in NY, NY, and has received several Awards of Excellence in its juried exhibitions. She has received numerous awards from the Contemporary Hispanic Market, BoldBrush Painting Competition, International Society of Experimental Artists, and the International Society of Acrylic Painters.
