Museum Series Aquabord™ is a textured, highly absorbent watercolor panel designed for watercolor, gouache, and other water media. It is crafted on sealed Hardbord™, protected with our proprietary Archiva-Seal™ barrier, and coated with an acid free clay and mineral ground with a texture similar to cold pressed watercolor paper. Because Aquabord is a rigid watercolor board, it stays flat under heavy washes and is ready to use with no stretching or mounting, making it ideal for plein air. Artists use Aquabord for vibrant color, glazing and layering, and for lifting and reworking without the pilling that can happen on paper. Once sealed, Aquabord can be framed and displayed without glass.

TIP: Apply a thin layer of water to the Aquabord surface using a flat watercolor brush to release trapped air. Once the surface is slightly damp and no more visible air is released, apply color.

Aquabord™ features

An Amazing Watercolor Surface

Achieve truer, brighter colors, endless glazes, and easily lift colors back to the white of the surface to create depth and highlights. Aquabord’s durable clay coated surface holds up to repeated lifting and reworking without the pilling or surface breakdown that can happen on watercolor paper, and it even allows light scratching or etching for fine detail.

Frame Without Glass

Unlike watercolor paper, once sealed, Aquabord can be displayed without glass. That means no glare and nothing between the artwork and the viewer. For many artists, this saves time and reduces custom framing costs. Cradled Aquabord panels can also be displayed without a frame at all.

High-Density Hardbord™ Core

Aquabord is built on a rigid, sealed Hardbord™ core, so it stays flat under heavy washes. No stretching, taping, or mounting is required. It will not tear, shrink, or buckle like watercolor paper can. For plein air, Aquabord acts as its own backing board, so you can paint in the field without extra support.

Truly Archival

Sealed and protected with our proprietary Archiva-Seal™ barrier technology to prevent yellowing from Support Induced Discoloration (SID), maintaining the artwork’s integrity and reflecting Ampersand’s commitment to professional conservation and archival quality.

Eco-Friendly and Artist Safe

Central to Ampersand’s mission is to ensure that our products do not harm the environment or the artists who use them. Both our domestic and imported panels are made from FSC-certified forest products that promote sustainable forests.

Handcrafted in the USA

Proudly handcrafted in our factory in Buda, Texas. Unparalleled quality and craftsmanship have made Ampersand Art Supply the leader in painting panels for over 30 years.
