Ampersand's Unprimed Basswood Artist Panel is a smooth, absorbent, uncoated panel that is free from plywood seams, knots, or troublesome raised fibers.

Unprimed Basswood can be used with a variety of media. With the exception of encaustics and pyrography, it is strongly recommended to seal and prime all unprimed panels before use. Once sealed and primed, the surface is perfect for mixed media, collage, and heavy paint applications like pouring.

Unprimed Basswood features

Smooth Surface Without Imperfections

Ampersand’s Unprimed Basswood Artist Panel is sanded perfectly smooth and has no seams, distinct knots, "football" patches, or problematic fiber raising.

Strength and Versatility

The strong 4mm premium basswood surface is perfect for priming and painting, encaustic, mixed media, collage, wood burning, and heavy paint applications.

Ready to Customize

Unprimed wood panels are ideal for artists that prefer a quality surface to seal and prime with a ground of their choice.

Cradled Profiles

High-density, solid wood cradles provide a beautiful profile and offer extra support to protect your art and prevent warping.

Stronger Than Birch

Basswood is a premium, select wood that outperforms the commonly used birch plywood in many ways. It is inherently smoother with a tight wood grain and no raised fibers, making it easier to gesso and paint on.

Eco-Friendly and Artist Safe

Central to Ampersand’s mission is to ensure that our products do not harm the environment or the artists who use them. Both our domestic and imported panels are made from FSC-certified forest products that promote sustainable forests and are also free from formaldehyde or harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds), unlike other hardboards and MDF boards.
