The mark of nature combined with encaustic painting creates works that reference memory, change, and time. Utilizing the natural luminosity, textural and layering possibilities of encaustic, participants will experiment with innovative materials, drawing and marks to depict the spirit and essence of the land. Easy to moderate hikes exploring the rugged natural beauty of The Mad River Valley are led by Dietlind and Lorraine. Along with daily journaling, meditation, yoga, readings and expressive mark-making exercises, these immersive hikes will provide the inspiration for which to develop ideas and provide areas of focus for series-based work while also developing your personal artistic voice. Considerations of our body’s connection and its direct relationship to landscape will also be discussed. Optional individual critiques with both instructors will be offered to all participants.

Layers + Translucency takes students beyond the basics involved in working with encaustic, offering participants a deeper understanding of how to create paintings that suggest luminosity, depth, and dimension.

We will work with a range of opaque and translucent paint, using both medium and color to push some elements back and bring others to the foreground. Emphasis will be placed on creating a sense of radiant light, on the balance and weight of composition, and on expressing meaning through an exploration of accumulating marks and drawings at varying levels. Writing and drawing exercises will help students explore and develop their own visual vocabulary.

Join Jane Hunt and follow in the footsteps of master painters Monet, Pisarro, Renoir, Gaugin, Picasso, Cassatt, and more. Each day you will enjoy artistic and cultural experiences: explore Monet's house and gardens, paint the church in Auvers sur Oise where Van Gogh painted his final piece, visit the auberge where he lived his final days...and much more! Jane Hunt's plein air workshops are extremely comprehensive and have been described as "art school in a week". She will de-mystify the painting process by teaching straightforward, easy to understand lessons. Using tried and true principles as a jumping off point will allow you to loosen up and find your own voice.

Note: Open to all levels (ideal for intermediate students). Space is very limited (max 12 participants/workshop).

This new and exciting 3-day workshop is designed to expand your toolbox to combine metallic surfaces such as rust, copper, bronze and pewter with your encaustic paintings.

Jodi will demonstrate how to create metallic surfaces in your work using Sophisticated Finishes paint and patinas. The paints contain real metal particles such as iron, copper and bronze. She will also cover different substrates such as Claybord and Encausticbord by Ampersand Art panels.

These finishes create beautiful, rusted and patina affects on many surfaces and can be combined under or over encaustic paint. Jodi will also show how to add a variety of surface treatments including powdered graphite and metal leafing. These surfaces can be layered or be the final finish. The metallic paints bind on porous and non-porous surfaces.
